Fan of the Quarter!
Interviewed by Kayt
Our Fan of the Month, or actually the Quarter, is a cool guy from Montana, with tons of musical interests, who is living proof it's never too late to become a fan of Our Favorite Band. Pat wrote a review of a Montana show that's featured elsewhere in this very fanzine issue, and he has this to say about the band: "Red Elvises are pure, unadulterated fun. They are a totally de-inhibiting dance band. Please go if you ever get the chance." I came across Pat online and "stole" his enthusiastic and candid Igor and Red Elvises comments off a message board even before contacting him for permission to use his words. Many thanks go out to Rick Vaughn for sending me the link to Pat's comments on the drownedinsound.com website. Join me in welcoming our featured fan for July, August and September!

Do you have any favorite books?
Favorite book is "In Watermelon Sugar" by Richard Braughtigan.
What music are you into, in addition to Red Elvises?
I am into awesome music. I have been a music enthusiast since the 1960's. I am 54 now and I know more about what cool music is than most anyone on the planet. That is why I am currently building a music website called "musicnazi.com." I absolutely LOVE so many different kinds of music and so many artists and composers that it wouldn't be fair to say "this is what I'm into" but if you must know:
Zappa, Beefheart, The Beatles, Nick Cave, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Residents, Sun Ra, Lee Hazelwood, Crispin Glover, Tool, Bauhaus, My Bloody Valentine, Can, Soft Machine, Secret Machines, Gong, Nurse With Wound, Stranglers, The Saints, Devo, everything Mike Patton does, The Doors, Swans and every M. Gira project, Kraftwerk, Legendary Pink Dots, Diamanda Galas, Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Television, Minutemen, Liars, Echo and the Bunnymen, Ride, Neu, Pixies, Rammstien, Pussy Galore, Nirvana, Spirit Caravan, Palace Brothers, Jeff Buckley, Throbbing Gristle, My Dying Bride, Opeth, Dungen, Wolfmother, Arvo Part, Gorecki, Penderecki, Sterolab, Cows, Henry Cow, Henry Kaiser, Jesus and Mary Chain, Mazzy Star, Glen Branca, Jim Carroll, Interpol, Dinosaur Jr. Coil, Current 93, Clinic, Julian Cope, Faust, Iggy Pop, any soundtrack the Sean Of The Dead guys put out, Janes Addiction, King Crimson, Klaxons, Massive Attack, The Knife, Roxy Music, Bradford Cox, The Magnetic Fields, !!!, The Gothic Archies, Sex Pistols, F**k Buttons, Atlas Sound, BORIS, sunn o))), Earth, The Melvins, Oren Ambarchi, Torche, Grails, MEGAPUSS, Holy F**K, Crystal Castles, Death From Above 1979, Queens Of The Stone Age, Belong & GROWING- (these are just a few of my favorite "Rock" artists.
When, where, how, etc. did you first hear and experience Red Elvises?
The first Red Elvises show I went to was last July. The Red Elvises were headlining a one day event called "Two Mile Festival" which was being held in a cow pasture near Red Lodge. A forest fire erupted in the mountains (a safe distance away but none the less very dramatic flames and smoke) just adjacent to the performance stage a few hours before the Elvises started playing. By the time they came on stage the crowd was "primed" to the gills, the fire raged in the background hill and it turned in to the hoedown of the apocalypse. There were young and old, dogs, cats, horses and cows - the only thing missing were chickens and the poe-leece - awesome nite - I kissed every member of the band except the chick – Shemankova - haha. My wife had to duct tape me in bed when we got home.
How many times have you seen them?
A friend of mine is a promoter in Red Lodge, Montana and I have seen them twice.
What is it about Red Elvises that draws you to them, that you like the most?
What draws me to the Red Elvises is they are soooo alive. They celebrate life in a way that is very rare- honestly. They sing about things which really suck and things that are really embarrassing which most of us spend so much energy trying to ignore that being at a Red Elvises show is always emotionally cleansing and freeing. I usually breathe deeper and easier for a few days after a Red Elvises gig and then I go right back to being a tight ass.
What are your favorite Red Elvises songs?
My Love Is Killing Me is my favorite RE tune but only cause you made me pick one. I love them all though.
What would you like to see them do in the future? Any ideas? Anything you’d like to say to the band?
If I could say anything to the band it would be: “Yo Igor, write A Metal Elvises song dude!!!!”
Okay, last question… Do you have anything you’d especially like to say to all the fans?
To the fans I say: "I hope the Elvises and all of us have plenty of gigs ahead of us and we can rock and disco out till false teeth and support hose fall off!!!" (I am knocking on wood right NOW.)
Pat and his lovely wife, Sonya. |
