Vol. 9, Issue 3 March 1, 2008
The Red Pages

When March arrives Spring can't be far behind, and Spring is a time of change and rebirth. Tragically, though, there are times when we must mourn the passing of those who meant so much to so many people.

Martin, at a party with Jamie, Igor and Elena in December 2006

For many years, Martin Alcala was a familar figure at Rusty's Surf Ranch in Santa Monica whenever Red Elvises played there. He helped the guys with their gear and rocked out to their music, but of course he was so much more to them, friend, neighbor (to Oleg and Oleg-Schramm), trusty and beloved comrade. Jamie posted the sad news of Martin's death in February to the Red Elvises Yahoo Groups List, and I'd like to repost her beautiful words here:

"Rest in Peace Martin Alcala, Venice Beach and Red Elvises will not be the same without their In-town Roadie/Spiritual Advisor. Martin was family to me and many many others, there have been crowds of mourners in Venice he is sorely missed by all."

Also, from Red Elvises' Myspace page, this bulletin:
Red Elvises In-Town Roadie/Spiritual Advisor, Martin Alcala, passed away on Monday, February 11th at his home in Venice Beach, California. Proud Los Angeles native from the indigenous Tongva Tribe, Martin was a great long-time friend and neighbor of Red Elvises and the community and will be missed by many."

I feel very honored to have made the acquaintance of this fine man, as are countless others, and to have enjoyed his company at Rusty's and at Venice parties many times over the past nine years. I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to speak to him one last time outside his apartment in December 2007. Please keep Martin and his family and friends in whatever form of spiritual thoughts and prayers you may have.

March is known for the famous drinking holiday, St. Patrick's Day, so we provide you this month with a "recipe" for green beer. And since Winter might not be quite over in the colder areas, a hearty Russian stew recipe may be useful as well. I will find you some new games and diversions, but please enjoy the current ones. If you have any games, puzzles, etc. you'd like to contribute, feel free. We also have a slew of Oleg's photos from June and July 2007 to share. Some funny stuff there, especially when people start putting fake mustaches on their faces.

March is also the birthday month of one of our favorite guys, Igor! His birthday is March 27th so please wish him well. For those of you who live in the southern California area or can get there, Red Elvises are playing Rusty's on March 28th to celebrate Igor's birthday, so be sure to go and tell Igor he doesn't look a day over...25, yeah, that'll work. Anyone in the San Diego area can celebrate the next night at Tio Leo's.

Have a good month and be careful out there in the March winds,
Kayt
