Fan of the Month!
Interviewed by Kayt
To start the New Year out nicely we have a brand new Fan of the Month from South Carolina. Red Elvises play a terrific venue there, in Greenville, called The Handlebar, a big place with great food and a huge stage. They rock the house every time they're there and Amber, along with her little girl, has had the pleasure of seeing them there. Join me in welcoming her as our first Fan of the Month for 2008!

For the record, what is your name?
Amber. Let’s just stay on a first name basis. Just in case one of us is in the witness protection program or something. I’m not… but let’s be safe.
Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Texas. How I ended up in Greenville, SC is beyond my scope of understanding. It would be much cooler if it was called Greendale, don’t ya think?
What were your main interests, entertainment and otherwise, growing up? Any obsessions you don't mind people knowing about?
At fifteen, I was mildly obsessed with the guy across the street with the gray van – but I’m not sure that’s what you were asking… I have always enjoyed music; yes I was a victim of the whole New Kids on the Block thing. Then when I turned fourteen I was introduced to the sounds of Frank Zappa and it all changed for me. I don’t think I have listened to the radio since then. |
Tell us about your musical endeavors and any musical instruments you play…
In junior high I played the trumpet.
What accomplishments are you most proud of at this point in your life?
Mostly, the fact that I am still alive, my daughter, and my picture with Igor.
What are your favorite movies?
Spy Game, Infamous, The Boondock Saints, Wonder Boys, Willy Wonka, Lolita, Run Lola Run… just to name a few.
Do you have any favorite books?
I don’t have much time for reading since becoming a parent, other than children’s books and instruction manuals.
What music are you into, in addition to Red Elvises?
I love Neil Young; I could indulge in him forever. Lately, I have been stuck in this whole train wreck obsession thing with Amy Winehouse. It’s not healthy, but it’s not bad. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, my ipod goes from Townes Van Zandt to the Dead Milkmen to Bobby Goldsboro. Seriously. And my sister turned me on to Antony and the Johnsons recently, very freaky but very good.
When, where, how, etc. did you first hear and experience Red Elvises?
Long ago in a land far away (Texas) - back when downloading music didn’t mean jail time, before napster was a bad word - I was trying to download the song by Heart “All I Wanna Do is make love to you.” I got the Red Elvises instead and was immediately hooked!
About how many times have you seen them?
Well, before the restraining order I would see them all the time… now it’s got to be at least a hundred feet.
Interviewer's interjection: Riiight... She's joking, everyone... you are, aren't you? [haha]
What is it about Red Elvises that draws you to them, that you like the most?
It’s just Igor. He rocks my socks off, ya know.
What's the farthest you've traveled to see them? And do you have a
good story around that?
I would probably say about ten minutes… I had to stop and get smokes. It was a pretty uneventful journey.
Which show is your favorite of the RE shows you've seen?
The one where the guys did the whole full Monty thing on stage, it kind of threw me off for a moment, but I was hip to it… that happened, right? Maybe it was a dream. Oh well, I have been pleased with every experience, real and imaginary.
Any other standout, all time great Red Elvises memories so far?
My four-year-old daughter has become a fan of the band. It’s been awesome to share the experience of my favorite band with her. At a show one night Adam gave her his drumsticks at the end – boy, was I jealous – but that is one of the times in life you try and remember you are the adult and let your child enjoy the spotlight. She thinks Adam is the neatest thing since peanut butter.
What are your favorite Red Elvises songs?
"My Love is Killing Me," "My Darling Lorraine," "Juliet," "Winter Reggae…" just the whole Lunatics and Poets album – Its freakin’ fabulous!
What would you like to see them do in the future? Any ideas? Anything you’d like to say to the band?
I’d like to see them do dinner at my place the next time they’re in town. That would be fun. I would even cook something from that Russian cookbook you featured in the last issue, if it would please you. Other than that, ya’ll rock!
Okay, last question… Do you have anything you’d especially like to say to all the fans?
HAHA! I’m the fan of the month and you’re not!
Thank you very much, Amber, you did a great job!! Thanks for sharing your very cool photos with us too!
