Fan of the Month!
Interviewed by Kayt

Marti in the middle!

To start the New Year off we have a Fan of the Month from the Midwest. She's the daughter of a long-time Red Elvises fan that some of us have seen at shows and chatted with on Tuesday nights, our own "Redfreak" (Willie). Here is his daughter Marti who also loves Our Favorite Band and has also seen a nice selection of shows. Congrats to Marti, a new generation of Red Elvises fans and our first Fan of the Month of 2004!

For the record, what is your name?
Martha Dixon, but most people call me Marti. In chat I go by Twerp. Willie Dixon is my dad.

Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
I was born in Naperville, Illinois, but I grew up in various towns around Illinois.

What were your main interests, entertainment and otherwise, growing up? Any obsessions you don’t mind people knowing about?
Most of my spare time is spent hanging out with my friends playing Vampire the Masquerade, a live action role playing game similar to Dungeons and Dragons. We also watch a lot of movies. I also play a lot of adventure games on my computer and read when I get a chance.

Tell us about your musical endeavors and any musical instruments you play…
When I was in Jr. High school I started taking coronet lessons but had to get braces and that ended that. I can’t really carry a tune on my own so mostly I just sing in the car or the shower. Other than that I am a great listener.

What accomplishments are you most proud of at this point in your life?
The fact that I am 27 years old and I don’t have any kids and I support myself with only a little help from time to time (thanks, Dad). I have a great job that I love doing every day. I have fabulous friends and family that I know are there for me.

What are your favorite movies?
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH! I used to work for Blockbuster so I have seen way too many to be able to name just one. I would have to say the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy even though I haven’t seen the final one yet. Of course “Six String Samurai.” “Armageddon” always makes me cry. Anything with Sean Connery is always good and I hate to admit it but “Care Bears Movie 2” still makes me laugh.

Do you have any favorite books?
Another tough one…… “The Hobbit” (it was the first book I ever read with the help of my dad). “I Robot” by Asimov, “Farmer in the Sky” by Heinlein, Aerosmith Autobiography, and any old trashy historical romance.

What music are you into, in addition to Red Elvises?
I guess I would have to say first of all Aerosmith ( I have a good sized tattoo of them on my back). Eric Clapton, Beatles (Dad says I was named after a song on the White Album), Eminem, Dave Matthews to name a few. I guess I like it all except most new Gospel, and Opera.

When, where, how, etc. did you first hear and experience Red Elvises?
My dad started playing them for me and I thought they were okay, then he dragged me to see them at Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn and they just blew me away. The energy and sheer craziness of the guys was great. I ended helping Dad sell merchandise for the show and Avi gave me a free t-shirt that they all signed for me.

About how many times have you seen them?
Three times in Wisconsin and at least five times in Chicago.

What is it about Red Elvises that draws you to them, that you like the most?
The way they can capture such a diverse crowd and get them all dancing together. Also the fact that I just can’t seem to sit still when I listen to them.

What’s the furthest you’ve traveled to see them? And do you have a good story around that?
I drove three hours in the rain to see them in Milwaukee. Then after the show I went back to their hotel with Ron and Linda and Rikki with the guys and partied till 3 AM. It was the night Oleg gave Linda the Belly Dance video. We all had a great time and I had the chance to see them and talk to them without having to yell or feel like I was disturbing their break.

Which show is your favorite out of all the RE shows you've seen?
The time I took my roommate Aaron (he toured with TLC) to see them at the Elbo Room in Chicago. He couldn’t believe how awesome they really were live. My dad, Aaron and Zhenya made sure I was pulled up on stage for “I Wanna See You Belly Dance.”

Any other standout, all time great memories of shows you’ve seen so far?
The last time I saw them at Fitzgeralds I got a chance to talk to Adam. We were both wearing fake leather pants (his black, mine red) and couldn’t help but complain about the sweat problem but admitted that they too fun NOT to wear.

What are your favorite Red Elvises songs?
I wore a hole in “Who’s Your Daddy” on Bedroom Boogie I played it so much (not an easy thing to do on a CD). Also “Red Lips Red Eyes Red Stockings,” “Belly Dance,” “Love Rocket,” and “Juliet.”

What would you like to see them do in the future? Any ideas? Anything you’d like to say to the band?
I wish they would play here more often. Other than that I think the guys are GREAT. I love the new lineup. Adam and Schramm are great additions. To the Guys all I can say is “I WANT MORE!!!!”

Okay, last question… Do you have anything you’d especially like to say to all the fans?
Always wear RED with a SMILE! : )
