Fan of the Month!
Interviewed by Kayt

Sarah Savoy with Oleg This month's Fan of the Month is all the way over in Russia! Internet access even to receive and send these questions via email is a challenge at times there, so she gets an "A" for effort! Sarah is an American who moved to Russia and is now grooving to the Moscow beat. She's looking forward to seeing the guys over there this month.

For the record, what is your name?
Sarah Dover Savoy

Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
Born and very proudly raised for 24 years in Louisiana, USA. However, I'm still growing up, slowly, and I had my 25th birthday in Moscow, Russia on June 22.

What were your main interests, entertainment and otherwise, growing up? Any obsessions you don’t mind people knowing about?
Music has always been my main interest, but I can go into that in the next question. In addition to music, I have been obsessed with Russian literature for the past ten years. My other interests include cartoons, cooking, horseback riding...and long walks on the beach?!? (I always feel that I sound stupid answering questions like these.)

My obsessions are very odd and include the fact that I refuse to eat the butt-end of anything, especially that of sausages, but also of vegetables and bread (I call it "alien bread").

Tell us about your musical endeavors and any musical instruments you play?
I play piano and guitar, but I have studied cello as well. I've dabbled in saxophone and trumpet and I am currently trying to learn to play single-row, diatonic accordion, Cajun-style.

My family is very musical and we have a number of bands. We're currently working on three records, on two of which I will perform. My parents and my brothers are professional musicians, an idea that no longer appeals to me so much for my own life due to the incredibly unpredictable nature of such a career.

What accomplishments are you most proud of at this point in your life?
I don't know. I don't think I've really accomplished anything. I have recorded some music, I've completed my education, I've gotten to Russia...nothing really impressive, but maybe someday...maybe...

What are your favorite movies?
Silence of the Lambs, The Breakfast Club, Pink Flamingos, Bad Taste, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Sid and Nancy. I like Six-String Samurai, but it's not a favorite. Oh, and “Konchi mne v Zad.” (To those who understand the title, I'm only joking. Sorry.)

Do you have any favorite books?
Anything by Dostoyevsky is an automatic favorite, but I also love The Master and Margarita, No Exit (although I realize it's a play), The Chronicles of Narnia, Dangerous Angels, and pretty much everything by Mark Twain.

What music are you into, in addition to Red Elvises?
This is the most complicated question in the world for me to answer. I like Limpopo, Amedee Ardoin, Jason Frey & Travis Matte, Anti-Nowhere League, Old Dirty Bastard, D.R.I., Bravo, Leningrad, The Dwarves, Hank Williams, Iry LeJeune, Memphis Minnie, Operation Ivy, Patsy Cline, Pro-Pain, Reverend Horton Heat, the Weary Boys, Subhumans, Black Lukitch, Victor Tsoih, Cyndi Lauper, Depeche Mode, and Elvis Presley. I also love all of my family's bands (Savoy-Doucet, Savoy Family, the Magnolia Sisters, Red Stick Ramblers, Wilson Savoy and his White Mule Boys).

When, where, how, etc. did you first hear and experience Red Elvises?
Grant Street Dancehall, Lafayette, Louisiana. I have no idea when. One of my friends told me that a Russian surf-rock band would be performing there that night and asked if I was interested. Never having heard Russian rock, I was very interested, but almost didn't go because I had plans to go somewhere else. Thankfully, I decided to go and that decision has made a fairly great impact on my life.

About how many times have you seen them?
I'm so thankful this question doesn't require me to be specific. I'd say I've seen them probably seven dreamy times.

What is it about Red Elvises that draws you to them, that you like the most?
Their music, naturally, but also their passion for what they do, their talent, their brilliance, their personalities, their clothes...Oleg's smile that makes you forget all your troubles and seems to make the world a better place for a while, Igor's teeth and laugh...their warmth, their dance moves......

What’s the furthest you’ve traveled to see them? And do you have a good story around that?
Sorry, no story here and nothing very exciting or impressive. I've only traveled two hours from Lafayette to New Orleans to see them, but I would travel the globe with them if I could. However, they'll be here in September, so seeing them in Russia should be interesting. I wish I could say I came here just to see them, but that's not the case, so I can't offer any exciting stories.

Any other standout, all time great memories of shows you’ve seen so far?
No shows stand out in particular but they've all been so fantastic. I die anytime they perform "Blue Moon," so those shows stand out.

What are your favorite Red Elvises songs?
My absolute favorite is "My Darling Lorraine." Other favorites are "Blue Moon," "A Kegga Beer and Potato Chips," "Strip Joint is Closed," "Gypsy Heart," "Wonderful Night," "Sad Cowboy Song," "Moscow," "Natasha Loves Reggae," "On Wings of Love," "Candle" ("Cvecha"), and "Colors of Rainbow," in no particular order.

Okay, last question…Do you have anything you’d especially like to say to all the fans?
If you work nights and can't take off when the boys are playing your town or city, quit your job. Neitzsche said, "You must have chaos within you to give birth to the rising star." So, who knows how much you'd be hurting your life if you don't live freely to rock in red?
