Letter to the Editrix
Hi,
My name is Ann Morris and considering the fact that I am a 52 year old(to be
53 in December) grandmother, I'm almost certainly not the kind of person
you'd expect to be writing to the RED PAGES. On the other hand, old hippie
chicks like me grew up with rock 'n' roll and we don't just like it, we love
it! One of my childhood memories is of my dad using his tennis racket for a
guitar and pretending to be Elvis. We always had rock in our home.
I saw the Beatles in September of 1964 and I saw the Monkees with Jimi
Hendrix as their opening act in 1967. I'm no stranger to rock and yet, I've
been somewhat out of touch it seems.
My first experience (not to be my last also) with the RED ELVISES took place
November 8, 2002 at the Skipperdome in Tampa, Florida. I'd been invited to
go to the show by this strange science guy who works with my husband who is
also a strange science guy but very cool, of course. I'd never even heard of
the RED ELVISES before that day! Hard to believe, I know, but I am legally
blind and can't drive a a car, so I don't get out much. No really, I don't
get out much. I am never the one to hear about a group first. I see my
friends and say stuff such as, "You have gotta hear this group RED ELVISES
'cause they are soooo cool," and they'll say,"Oh they've been around for a
long time. You never heard them before--they play them all the time on
WMNF!"
Anyway, I digress (probably will again too).
The night was pleasantly balmy and I was in a mood to rock out. To my great
delight RED ELVISES were a seriously fun, rockin' band. The humor of their
patter and the sing alongs were just what the soul doctor ordered.
Now, I must digress again.
I am part of a group that holds a science fiction convention every October
and we have a party called the Ygor Party. A part of that is a yelling match
in which people try to outyell each other with which way they think the name
Ygor should be pronounced, "EE-GOR" or "EYE-GOR." Well, whenever RED ELVIS
Igor's name was mentioned on stage at the show, there were people in the
audience who yelled out "EYE-GOR!" (Not me!!!) I knew where they had been
and why they did that but I bet Igor wondered what the heck was going on.
Back on the track, hoping that a train is not here also...
We had to buy a CD at the show and I have since bought the live album
because I had to have one that had "Gypsy Heart" on it. I am telling
everyone how great the ELVISES are and I'll be going back to their concert
in March. I'm totally hooked. I love the way they rock, their humor, and the
way they are able to play many styles of music. They are not just a gimmick
band. They have real musical talent and skill. Also, despite their
admonition that the more you drink the better they sound, you can be stone
sober and they are GREAT!!! ROCK ON RED ELVISES.
Peace,
Ann Morris
