Who's Your Daddy?
By Jennifer Peoples

I went to both the San Francisco and San Jose shows and before I say anything else, I want everyone to know that I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the San Francisco show. In fact, I had a little too much fun. Anyone looking for a detailed account of the show will be sorely disappointed for my memories of that night are through an alcoholic haze. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

The San Francisco show was at one of my favorite venues, The Justice League. It’s a decent sized place but still cozy enough to reach out and touch an Elvis. Opening for the Red Elvises was another truly strange group of men that call themselves the Phenomenauts. Their music is loud, their moves are choreographed, and at key moments in the show a fire extinguisher mounted to the drum set goes off. The Phenomenauts are very cool but I was happy when the guys got onto stage. They played a mixture of old and new songs, and switched off playing the drums. My favorite thing that they did was during one of the songs all three of them played the drums at the same time. It was a very well done drum segment and they all looked extremely cute huddled behind the drum set.

The next night the guys played in San Jose at the Cactus Club, which is sticky and uncontrollably loud. But I will admit that the sound was better than last time. The Red Elvises took the stage about an hour late (not their fault) and the crowd was ready for them. Despite the Cactus Club’s unappealing atmosphere, it’s always packed when the Elvises are playing. The guys played a bunch of songs and switched instruments all through the set, but I think they’re switching less than they used to. Oleg spent a large portion of the show playing drums. As compared to when Avi first left (sniff) and they were switching after every song or every other song. I enjoyed the show, but not nearly as much as the San Francisco show.
