Red Elvises at the Blue Café
By Kayt
The Blue Café is a nice place to see Red Elvises play. It's cool, relaxed and has plenty of room for dancing. The food isn't bad either. The only thing is that they play there on Sunday nights starting around 9:30pm, which makes it a little difficult for us regular working people who have to get up early on Monday mornings to take that big swim in Lake Real World. But we "suffer" for our favorite music, and if all suffering were as sweet this world would be one luscious place indeed. That said, due to a project at my work necessitating my early arrival on Monday morning, I could only stay for the first set of the July 9th show. But it was terrific as always, and I was told (thanks, Rachel!) that the second set was equally as wonderful if not more so, and started off with a rocking "Colors of Rainbow" that I unfortunately had to miss.
But I'm happy for what I had, which was a kick ass great first set including a mix of songs from all the CDs. The "Shake Your Pelvis" songs sounded amazing live, as always. The crowd was dancing from the start and the good-time vibe was in the air. The first set ended with "I Wanna See You Belly Dance" and some of us were invited….that is, grabbed by the hand and pulled up onstage (thanks, Igor!) to participate. As loud and wonderful as Red Elvises sound from the dance floor, they are even louder and more dance-inducing when one is between Igor and Oleg, with Avi pounding away on the drums no more than two feet away! Trying to dance with some amount of rhythm, however miniscule mine might be, while also trying to avoid colliding with a big red bass balalaika, that was the challenge…but it sure was fun and I guess it's time I came out of the closet and admitted it….I am a closet wanna-be performer, even though I also freely admit to having no talent in the entertainment field. That's why I was always in the back row during childhood dance recitals, and that's why the performing is better left to the professionals, our truly mega-talented, amazing and lovely favorite band! Every minute of that first set was fantastic, it goes without saying. Next time I'm staying for the whole show, and if my co-workers wonder why I'm sleeping at my desk the next day I'll just tell them they should've been there!
