WHY THE RED ELVISES ROCK MIGHTIER THAN ZEUS
Jennifer Peoples
A friend of mine turned me on to the Red Elvises. She had seen them somewhere and it was love at first sight. Or should I say, obsession at first sight. Every time I would talk to her, our conversation would invariably include her gushing about how great they are and how I had to see them perform. In an effort to convert me, she sent me a tape of their music. I liked it, but the musical experience was by no means earth-shattering, so when she told me that they were going to be appearing in San Francisco, I reluctantly agreed to go with her.
I discovered something very important and profound at that concert: once you've seen the Red Elvises perform live you can never go back. NEVER. All of my friend's rants became crystal clear after that night. Avi was in the back, sweating and driving the beat with drumsticks traveling at the speed of light. Oleg, red hair blazing, was the master of ceremonies with the smooth schtick between songs and a playful leer for every woman in the audience. Zhenya, reserved in comparison to the other members of the band, blew me away with his rockin' guitar solos and lightning-fast fingers. Igor shook his hips, curled his lip, crooned into the microphone about not being my kind of guy and I was hooked.
I've was converted to the Red Elvis side and never looked back. My days of casually listening to their music are gone. Now, whenever I hear their music, I must sing along and relive the live performances. I've only been to six of their concerts but each time they get better and better. So my advice to anyone reading this is to see them live. It's worth it.
Hey Avi, do "Play That Funky Music" just one more time okay? Please?
