WHY I LOVE RED ELVISES
Kayt Owens
I first met Red Elvises and experienced their incredible music a little over a year ago. Within about five minutes I knew there was something new and fun and wonderful in my life. My friend who was visiting from Chicago was there too, at the Martini Lounge in Los Angeles in late October of 1998, and she looked at me and practically read my thoughts when she said, "These guys are FUN!" We were instant Red Elvises converts and, as with all things, people, music, food and anything else I really really like, I knew I wanted to see more of them.
Fun is a major part of the Red Elvises’ appeal. Their sense of theatricality also appeals to me greatly because I’ve always had a fascination for theater and have been known to indulge in a bit of amateur theatrical-type dabbling myself in the past. But the main event is of course their music, the joyous dance-inducing Russian melodies that stole my heart and stir my soul. Before encountering these guys I hadn’t danced in public in more years than I care to remember; but now, it’s like my (often uncoordinated) feet have a mind of their own as soon as their music begins. I also have a growing collection of red clothing, but that’s another part of the story!
I think one reason so many people love Red Elvises is that, along with being some of the nicest guys in the world, they give their audiences so much happiness with their music. People of all backgrounds enjoy those universal feelings of joy that music and dancing evoke, and there is plenty of rock-‘n-roll-mixed-with-traditional-Russian-melodies happiness at every Red Elvises show. I also love and respect them because they are true professionals who put a tremendous amount of effort into every one of their shows, whether they’re tired from being on the road or not. And they always take the time to meet and talk to fans, which means a lot to admirers of any band. All of this makes any Red Elvises show a guaranteed good time. I love them very much; they have given me so many fun times that I hope continue well into the new century!
